ELC-10th Day

Double Past

There are sentences in which one is a complete sentence and the other is an incomplete sentence. The complete sentence is known as the Principal clause and the incomplete sentence is known as the Subordinate clause. A sentence where both complete and incomplete sentences are of the past tense, we form the incomplete sentence with the rule of Past Indefinite and complete sentences with the rules under which it falls.

Look at the following example:

जब मैं ऑफिस पहुंचा तो बरसात हो रही थी। When I reached the office, it was raining.
उपरोक्त वाक्य में दो वाक्य हैं। अधूरा वाक्य है "जब मैं कार्यालय पहुंचा", और यह Past Indefinite Tense के नियम के साथ बना है। पूरा वाक्य है "बारिश हो रही थी"। पूरा वाक्य Past Continuous Tense से संबंधित है; इसलिए यह Past Continuous Tense के नियम के अनुसार बना है। The above sentence has two sentences. The incomplete sentence is "when I reached office", and it is formed with the rule of Past Indefinite Tense. The Complete sentence is "It was raining". The complete sentence pertains to Past Continuous Tense; hence it is formed as per the rule of Past Continuous Tense.

When a sentence has two past tense sentences, we can either write the first incomplete sentence, later the complete sentence, or the first complete sentence and then the incomplete sentence. When we write incomplete sentence first before complete sentence, we use 'Comma(,)' after the incomplete sentence and then start the complete sentence. It is good to write complete sentence first.

Look at the following example:

जब मैं स्टेशन पहुंचा, वह मेरा इंतजार कर रहा था। When I reached the station, he was waiting for me.
वह मेरा इंतजार कर रहा था जब मैं स्टेशन पहुंचा। He was waiting for me when I reached the station.
