Direct-Indirect Speech - Optative Sentences

Rule No. 3

यदि इच्छासूचक वाक्य जिसमें ‘Would that….!' Or 'O that,…!'

If an Optative sentence which contains 'Would that….!' Or 'O that,…!', the Reporting Verb 'said to' is replaced with 'wished' and Conjunction word 'that' is used to connect both parts of the sentence. Usually these sentences are imaginary sentences, so we do not change the tense of the sentence. When the sentence contains 'O for…!', it normally does not have a verb, hence we do not require any Conjunction word.

Examples:

Direct Speech Indirect Speech
भिखारी ने कहा, "काश मैं एक करोड़पति होता!" The beggar said, "Would that I were a millionaire!" The beggar wished that he were a millionaire. भिखारी ने चाहा कि वह करोड़पति होता।
नेहा ने उसे कहा, "काश उस वक्त तुम यहां होते !" Neha said to him, "Would that you were here at that time!" Neha wished that he had been there at that time. नेहा ने कामना की कि वह उस वक्त वहां होते।
उसने कहा, "हे कि मैं एक रानी होती!"  She said, "O that I were a Queen!" She wished that she were a Queen. उसने चाहा कि वह एक रानी होती।
उसने कहा, "एक कप चाय के लिए!" She said, "O for a cup of tea!" She wished for a cup of tea. उसने एक कप चाय की कामना की।

Rule No. 4

If an Optative sentence which contains ‘If…were, the Reporting Verb ‘said to’ is replaced with ‘wished’ and Conjunction word 'that' is used to connect both parts of the sentence. We remove 'If' and use 'would' in place of 'were'. The first form of the verb comes after 'Would'.

Examples:

उन्होंने कहा, "अगर मैं एक पक्षी होता।" He said, "If I were a bird." He wished that he would be a bird. उसने चाहा कि वह एक पक्षी होता।
उसने कहा, "अगर मेरे पास जादू की छड़ी होती!" She said, "If I had a magic stick!" She wished that she would have a magic stick. उसने चाहा कि उसके पास एक जादू की छड़ी होती।
