Present Perfect Tense

Use of Present Perfect Tense in Various Other Situations

Work started in past and still continuing

हम Present Perfect Tense का उपयोग उस कार्य को व्यक्त करने के लिए भी करते हैं जो भूतकाल में शुरू हुआ और वर्तमान समय तक जारी है। ऐसे वाक्यों में, हम 'since/for' का उपयोग उस समय को दिखाने लिए करते हैं जब काम शुरू हुआ था।

We also use the Present Perfect Tense to express work that started in the past and is continuing until the present time. In such sentences, we use 'since / for' to show the time when the work began.

Use of Since/For

Since' is used before certain time For' is used before uncertain time
3 O'clock, 10 O'clock, 5 PM, 4 AM. Five hours, two hours, an hour
Monday, Saturday, Sunday few days, four days, seven days
March, June, December two months, eight months
2011, 2012, 2013 One year, ten years
Since long. for a long time
Yesterday, tomorrow, day after tomorrow
Morning, Evening, Night, Noon, Afternoon.
Birth, beginning, then, when

Look at these sentences:

वह पांच साल तक इस गेस्ट हाउस में रह चुकी है।
(वह अभी भी गेस्ट हाउस में रह रही है)
She has lived in this guest house for five years.
(She is still living in the guest house)
मैंने इस कॉलेज में लंबे समय तक पढ़ाया है।
(मैं अभी भी इस कॉलेज में पढ़ा रहा हूं)
I have taught in this college long.
(I am still teaching in this college)
हमने 2015 से इस कार्यालय में काम किया है।
(हम अभी भी कार्यालय में कार्यरत हैं)
We have worked in this office since 2015.
(We are still working in the office)
डॉ खेर ने 1984 से मंजुला का इलाज किया है।
(डॉ खेर अभी भी मंजुला का इलाज कर रहे हैं)
Dr Kher has treated Manjula since 1984.
(Dr Kher is still treating Manjula)

We have seen that past time (i.e. for five years, since 2015, since 1984) has come in Present Perfect tense because the work has started in the past and the work continues till the present time. But if the work is not continuing till the present time, then past time indicating words (i.e. yesterday, last month, last year, etc.) do not come in Present Perfect tense. If such past time indicating words come in a sentence, then the sentence becomes Past Indefinite tense.
