34th Day - After Tense and Active Passive, Direct & Indirect is the most important part of English Language. Today also we will continue Direct Indirect. |
We can report any Speech to another person either in the same words (known as Direct Speech or Direct Narration) OR report the speech in our words without changing the meaning (known as Indirect Speech or Indirect Narration).
Direct Indirect Speech - Exclamatory Sentences
Sentence that express strong feeling or emotions (like joy, sorrow, surprise, hatred, contempt, etc) are called exclamatory sentences. Exclamatory sentence ends with exclamation mark (!).
Vah vaakya jo prabal ahsaas ya bhaavanaao kee abhivyakti kare, Vismayaadibodhak vaakya kahlaataa hai. Vismayaadibodhak vaakyo ke ant meiN exclamation mark(!) aataa hai.
Rule no. 1
For making Indirect Speech of Exclamatory Sentence, 'Said' of Reporting Verb is changed according to the emotion of the 'Exclamatory Word' of Reporting Speech. A list of such words is given below.
Exclamatory vaakyo kaa apratyakSh kathan banaane ke liye Reporting Verb ke 'Said' ko Reporting Speech meiN aaye 'Bhaavsuchak shabd' ke anusaar badalate hai. Aise shabdoN kee ek soochi neeche
dee gai hai.

Same word can depict 'sorrow' or 'joy'. The specific emotion of above mentioned words is to be construed as per sentence.
Ek hee shabd 'dukh' yaa 'khushi' darshaa sakataa hai. Shabd kaa sahee bhaav vaakya se samajhanaa hai.
In case there is a desire or wish in the sentence (If I were you, If I were...), 'Said' is replaced with word 'Wished'.
Yadi vaakya meiN koi ichchhaa yaa kaamanaa ho (Yadi maiN...hotaa) to 'Said' ke sthaan par 'Wished' kaa prayog kiyaa jaataa hai.
Rule no. 2
The words 'What' & 'How' of Reporting Speech are replaced with words 'Very' Or 'Great'. 'Very' comes before Adjective and 'Great' comes before Noun.
Reporting Speech ke shabd 'What' aur 'How' ko 'Very' yaa 'Great' shabd se badalaa jaataa hai. 'Very' Adjective se pahale aur 'Great' Noun se pahale aataa hai.
Rule no. 3
In Exclamatory sentences, Comma (,) and Inverted Commas ("...") are removed and word 'That' is used to join both the parts.
Exclamatory Sentence meiN Comma (,) aur Inverted Commas ("...") ko haTaa kar dono bhaago ko joDane ke liye 'That' shabd kaa prayog hotaa hai.
Examples of Exclamatory Sentences

|Indirect||Gaurav khushee se chillaayaa ki unhone match jeet liyaa thaa.||Gaurav exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.|
|Direct||Usane Shimla meiN kahaa, "Vaah! Kitanaa achchhaa mausam hai."||She said in Shimla, "Wow! What a pleasant weather it is."|
|Indirect||Vah Shimla meiN khushee se chillaai ki mausam bahut achchhaa thaa.||She exclaimed with joy in Shimla that it was a very pleasant weather.|
|Direct||Darshako ne kahaa, "Aha! BaDaa manmohak goal hai".||The spectators said, "Bravo! A classical goal."|
|Indirect||Darshako ne kah kar taareef kee ki baDaa manmohak goal thaa.||The spectators applauded him saying that it was a classical goal.|
|Direct||Usane kahaa, "Oh! Maine apanaa mobile kho diyaa."||She said, "Oh! I lost my mobile."|
|Indirect||Usane dukh ke saath kahaa ki usane apanaa mobile kho diyaa thaa.||She exclaimed with sorrow that she had lost her mobile.|
|Direct||Vartika ne kahaa, "Aha! Avyan London se aayaa hai."||Vartika said, "Oh! Avyan has come from London."|
|Indirect||Vartika ne aashcharya se bolaa kee Avyan London se aayaa thaa.||Vartika exclaimed with surprise that Avyan had come from London.|
|Direct||"Chhee" Principal ne Ramesh se kahaa, "Tum is baar phir parikShaa meiN fail ho gaye ho"||"Pooh" said the Principal to Ramesh, "You have again failed in the examination."|
|Indirect||Principal ne upekShaa se kahaa ki Ramesh phir parikShaa meiN fail ho gayaa thaa.||The Principal exclaimed with contempt that Ramesh had again failed in the examination.|
|Direct||Neha ne kahaa, "Haay/Aah! Maine apanaa heere kaa kangan kho diyaa hai"||Neha said, "Alas! I have lost my diamond bangle."|
|Indirect||Neha ne dukh ke saath kahaa ki usane apanaa heere kaa kangan kho diyaa thaa.||Neha exclaimed with sorrow that she had lost her diamond bangle.|
|Direct||Usane kahaa, "Hai Bhagwaan! Vyakti meiN phir jaan aa gai hai."||He said, "Good God! The fellow has come to life again."|
|Indirect||Usane aashcharya se kahaa ki vyakti meiN phir jaan aa gai thee.||He exclaimed with surprise that the fellow had come to life again.|
|Direct||Usane apane naukar se kahaa, "Kitane bewakoof ho tum!"||She said to her servant, "How foolish you are!"|
|Indirect||Usane hairaanee se kahaa ki usakaa naukar bahut bewakoof thaa.||She exclaimed with surprise that her servant was very foolish.|
|Direct||Usane kahaa, "Aha! Kitanaa sundar drishya hai."||He said, "Ah! What a beautiful scene."|
|Indirect||Usane khushee se kahaa ki vah ek sundar drishya thaa.||He exclaimed with joy that it was a beautiful scene.|
|Direct||Prem jee Bhai ne kahaa, "Bahut achchhaa! Ramesh."||Prem jee Bhai said, "Well done! Ramesh."|
|Indirect||Prem jee Bhai ne saraahanaa kee ki Ramesh ne baDhiyaa kaam kiyaa.||Prem jee Bhai exclaimed with applause that Ramesh had done well.|
|Direct||Usane kahaa, "Agar maiN tumhaaree jagah hotaa to maine thappaD maar diyaa hotaa."||He said, "If I were you, I would have slapped him"|
|Indirect||Usane chaahaa ki vah thappaD maar detaa.||He wished that he would have slapped him.|
|Direct||Usane kahaa, "Agar maiN dhanwaan hotee to maine ek kothi apanee beTee ko de dee hotee."||She said, "If I were rich, I would have given one bungalow to my daughter"|
|Indirect||Usane chaahaa kee agar vah dhanwaan hotee to usane ek kothi usakee beTee ko de dee hotee.||She wished that if she had been rich, she would have given one bungalow to her daughter.|
|Direct||Neha ne Poonam se kahaa, "Mubaarak ho!"||Neha said to Poonam, "Congratulations!"|
|Indirect||Neha ne Poonam ko mubaarakbad dee.||Neha congratulated Poonam.|
|Direct||Vartu ne kahaa, "Bhagwaan kaa laakh laakh shukra hai!"||Vartu said, "Thank God!"|
|Indirect||Vartu ne Bhagwaan kaa shukriyaa adaa kiyaa.||Vartu thanked God.|
|Direct||Unahone hame kahaa, "Swaagat hai! Kripayaa andar aaiye."||They said to us, "Welcome! Please come in."|
|Indirect||Unahone hamaaraa swaagat kiyaa aur andar aane kaa nivedan kiyaa.||They welcomed us and requested to come in.|
|Direct||Usane kahaa, "Naya saal mubaarak ho!"||She said to me, "Happy New Year!"|
|Indirect||Usane mujhe naye saal kee mubaarakbad dee.||She wished me happy new year.|
|Direct||Madhur ne kahaa, "Janam din mubaarak ho!"||Madhur said, "Happy Birthday!"|
|Indirect||Madhur ne (mujhe/usay/tumko/..) janam din kee mubaarakbaad dee.||Madhur wished (me/her/him/you…) happy birthday.|
|Direct||Usane kahaa, "Kitanee bewakoof hoon maiN!"||She said, "How foolish I have been!"|
|Indirect||Usane afsoas kiyaa kee vah baDee bewakoof thee.||She regretted that she had been very foolish.|
|Direct||Captain ne kahaa, "Aha! Mere dosto tumane achchhaa kaam kiyaa hai."||The captain said, "Bravo! You have done well, my friends."|
|Indirect||Captain yah kah kar apane dosto kee saraahana kee ki unhone achchhaa kaam kiyaa thaa.||The captain applauded his friends saying that they had done well.|
|Direct||"Chhee kitanaa gandaa bachchaa!" nurse ne kahaa.||"Pooh what a dirty child!" said the nurse.|
|Indirect||Nurse ne ghriNaa se kahaa ki bachchaa bahut gandaa thaa.||The nurse exclaimed hatefully that the child was very dirty.|
|Direct||Naujawaan mahilaa ne kahaa, "Haay! Meraa pati jiwit nahee hai."||The young lady said, "Alas! my husband is no more."|
|Indirect||Naujawaan mahilaa ne dukh ke saath kahaa ki usakaa pati jiwit nahee thaa.||The young lady exclaimed with sorrow that her husband was no more.|
