32nd Day - After Tense and Active Passive, Direct & Indirect is the most important part of English Language. Today also we will continue Direct Indirect. |
We can report any Speech to another person either in the same words (known as Direct Speech or Direct Narration) OR report the speech in our words without changing the meaning (known as Indirect Speech or Indirect Narration).
Direct-Indirect Speech - Simple Interrogative Sentences
For the purpose of Direct-Indirect Speech, Interrogative Sentences are divided into two types - (1) W-family Interrogative Sentences and (2) Simple Interrogative Sentences (Other than W-family Sentences).
Direct-Indirect ke sandarbh meiN prashnavaachak vaakyo ko do bhaago meiN baanTaa gayaa hai - (i) W-family prashnavaachak vaakya aur (2) SaadharaN prashnavaachak vaakya (W-family ke alaawaa)
Simple Interrogative Sentences
The basic rules of changing Direct Speech to Indirect Speech described for simple sentences applies for all types of Sentences. There are certain changes in rules for each type of sentences.
PratyakSh kathan se ApratyakSh kathan meiN parivartan karane ke moolbhoot niyam sabhee prakaar ke vaakyo meiN laagu hote hai. Har prakaar ke vaakyo ke liye niyamo meiN kuchh antar hai.
Rule No. 1In all Interrogative sentences if Reporting Verb is 'say/say to, says/says to, will say/will say to or said/said to', in Indirect Speech also it will be changed to 'ask, asks, will ask or asked'.
Sabhee Prashnavaachak vaakyo meiN yadi Reporting Verb 'say/say to, says/says to, will say/will say to or said/said to' hai to Indirect Speech meiN inhe 'ask, asks, will ask or asked' se badalaa jaayegaa.
Rule No. 2In all Simple Interrogative sentences, Comma (,) and Inverted Commas ("...") are removed and word 'If' or 'Whether' is used to join both the parts.
Sabhee SaadharaN prashnavaachak vaakyo meiN Comma (,) aur Inverted Commas ("...") ko haTaa kar shabd 'If' or 'Whether' kaa prayog dono bhaago ko joDane meiN karate hai.
Rule No. 3For converting Direct Speech to Indirect Speech of all Interrogative Sentences, the interrogative form of the sentence is changed to Assertive form and Question Mark (?) is replaced with Full Stop (.).
Sabhee Prashnaatmak vaakyo ko pratyakSh kathan se apratyakSh kathan meiN badalate samay, prashnavaachak vaakya ko simple vaakya meiN banaayaa jaataa hai aur prashnavaachak chinh (?)
Full Stop (.) se badal diyaa jaataa hai.
Rule No. 4At the time of converting Direct Speech to Indirect Speech of all Interrogative Sentences 'Yes/No' Short Answer is also added with the Interrogative Sentences, answer is briefly described in place of simple 'Yes/No'. If answer is 'No', brief answer will be in Negative form and if it is 'Yes', the brief answer will be in Assertive form.
Sabhee Prashnaatmak vaakyo jahaaN 'Yes/No' uttar bhee juDaa ho, ko pratyakSh kathan se apratyakSh kathan meiN badalate samay, kewal 'Yes/No' ke sthaan par sankShipt uttar bhee likhaa jaataa hai.
Yadi uttar 'No' hai to uttar Negative form meiN hogaa aur yadi yah 'Yes' hai to uttar Assertive form meiN hogaa.
|Direct||Vah kahtee hai, "Kyaa meiN sundar dikh rahee hoon?"||She says, "Am I looking gorgeous?"|
|Indirect||Vah poochhatee hai ki kyaa vah sundar lag rahee hai.||She asks whether she is looking gorgeous.|
|Direct||Usane kahaa, "Kyaa maiN sundar nahee lag rahaa hoon?"||He said, "Am I not looking handsome?"|
|Indirect||Usane poochhaa ki kyaa vah sundar nahee lag rahaa thaa.||He asked whether he was not looking handsome.|
|Direct||Madhur ne Bhavin se kahaa, "Kyaa aaj tum office se jaldee aaoge?"||Madhur said to Bhavin, "Will you come early today from office?"|
|Indirect||Madhur ne Bhavin se poochhaa ki kyaa vah office se us din jaldee aayenge.||Madhur asked Bhavin whether he would come early that day from office.|
|Direct||Avyan ne Neha se kahaa, "Kyaa tum yah paheli hal kar sakatee ho? "Nahi" usane kahaa.||Avyan said to Neha, "Can you solve this puzzle?" "No", she said.|
|Indirect||Avyan ne Neha se poochhaa ki kyaa vah paheli hal kar sakatee hai. Usane kahaa, Nahee kar sakatee yaa Usane nakaaraatmak jawaab diyaa.||Avyan asked Neha if she could solve that puzzle. She said, She couldn't or She replied in negative.|
|Direct||Suman ne Swati se kahaa, "Kyaa tum usake baare meiN sab kuchh jaanatee ho?" Usane kahaa, "HaaN"||Suman said to Swati, "Do you know everything about him?" She said, "Yes".|
|Indirect||Suman ne Swati se poochhaa ki kyaa vah usake baare meiN sab kuchh jaanatee hai. Usane kahaa, jaanatee hai Yaa Usane sakaaraatmak jawaab diyaa.||Suman asked Swati whether she knew everything about him. She said, she did or She replied in affirmative.|
|Direct||Biswas jee ne mujhase kahaa, "Kyaa tumane Swaami Vivekanand jee par pustak paDh lee hai?"||Biswas jee said to me, "Have you read the book on Swaami Vivekananda?"|
|Indirect||Biswas jee ne mujhase poochhaa ki kyaa maine Swaami Vivekanand jee par pustak paDh lee hai.||Biswas jee asked me whether I had read the book on Swaami Vivekananda.|
|Direct||Usane Heena se kahaa, "Kyaa maine tumhe subah phone nahee kiyaa?"||She said to Heena, "Did I not telephone you in the morning?"|
|Indirect||Usane Heena se poochhaa ki kyaa usane use subah phone nahee kiyaa thaa.||She asked Heena whether she had not telephoned her in the morning.|
|Direct||GM ne mujhase kahaa, "Kyaa yah Theek hai agar tumhe Agra sthanantrit kar dey?"||GM said to me, "Is it fine if you are transferred to Agra?"|
|Indirect||GM ne mujhase poochhaa ki kyaa yah Theek thaa agar mujhe Agra sthanantrit kar kar de.||GM asked me whether it was fine if I was transferred to Agra.|
|Direct||Usane Heena se kahaa, "Kyaa tum Hamaaree shaadee ke baare meiN sanjeeda ho?"||He said to Heena, "Are you serious about our marriage?"|
|Indirect||Usane Heena se poochhaa ki kyaa vah unakee shaadee ke baare meiN sanjeeda thee.||He asked Heena if she was serious about their marriage.|
|Direct||Tumane Shalini se kahaa, "Kyaa tumhe Bhagwaan meiN vishwaas hai?"||You said to Shalini, "Do you have trust in God?"|
|Indirect||Tumane Shalini se poochhaa ki kyaa use Bhagwaan meiN vishwaas thaa.||You asked Shalini whether she had trust in God.|
