Past Continuous Tense

It is used to express an ongoing nature or continued action till a certain time in past. It is used to talk about a continuing action at a particular time in the past.


In Past Continuous Tense, time may come. Like in Present Continuous Tense, if starting time of the action is given and action remain continued, the Past Continuous Tense becomes Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

e.g. I was driving a car - Past Continuous Tense.
After adding continuous time 'for two hour' it becomes Past Perfect Continuous and will be translated as
I had been driving a car for two hours.

Past Continuous Tense meiN vaakyo ke ant meiN ‘rahaa thaa’, 'rahee thee’, 'rahe thay’ kaa prayog hotaa hai.
Note: Aise vaakyo meiN samay kaa prayog to ho sakataa hai lekin lagaataar samay kaa prayog nahee honaa chaahiye. Agar lagaataar samay kaa prayog ho to un vaakyo ko past perfect continuous kahate hai.
Jaise - Vah so rahaa thaa. - Past Continuous Tense.
Vah do ghanTe se so rahaa thaa. – Past Perfect Continuous Tense. (kyonki yahaaN lagaataar samay “do ghanTe se" kaa prayog huaa hai)

Type of Sentence Rule
Positive Subject + Was/Were + Verb (Ist form) + Ing + Object + (.)

In Past Continuous Tense 'Was / Were' is used in sentence and 'Ing' is added with first form of the main verb. 'Was' is used with 'I' and third person singular subject - he/she/it/Ram/Dog/Tree/etc.

Past Continuous Tense meiN 'Was / Were' kaa prayog hotaa hai aur verb kee first form ke saath 'Ing' lagaayaa jaataa hai. 'Was' kewal 'I' aur third person singular subject ke saath lagataa hai.

Past Continuous Tense - Positive Ram us par hans rahaa thaa.
Person Subject Was/Were Verb (Ist Form )+ Ing Object
Ist person I was laughing at him.
Ist Person -Plural We were laughing at him.
2nd Person You were laughing at him.
3rd Person -Singular He/She/It/Ram was laughing at him.
3rd Person -Plural They/boys were laughing at him.

Type of Sentence Rule
Negative Subject + Was/Were + Not + Verb (Ist form) + Ing + Object + (.)

In Past Continuous Negative sentence, 'Not' is added just before 'Verb(Ist form)'. 'Ing' is added with first form of Verb in all types of sentences of Past Continuous tense.

Past Continuous ke nakaaraatmak vaakya meN, 'Not' ko 'Verb(Ist form) + Ing' se pahale lagaate hai.


Past Continuous Tense - Negative Ham usase jhagaD nahee rahe thay.
Person Subject Was/Were Not + Verb (Ist Form )+ Ing Object
Ist person I was not fighting with him.
Ist Person -Plural We were not fighting with him.
2nd Person You were not fighting with him.
3rd Person -Singular He/She/It/Ram was not fighting with him.
3rd Person -Plural They/boys were not fighting with him.
