'Need' can be used both as a Modal Auxiliary Verb as well as Main Verb. Therefore it is also known as Semi Modal Verb.
'Need' ko Modal sahaayak Kriyaa aur mukhya Kriyaa dono prakaar se prayog kar sakate haiN. Isiliye ise Semi Modal Verb bhee kahate haiN.
Use of 'Need' as a Main Verb
As a Main Verb 'Need' is used as an ordinary verb and has the same three forms of verb and used as per the rules of different tenses. Like in Present Indefinite Tense the third person singular ends with an 's/es', and in interrogative and negative sentences 'Do/Does' is used. As a Main verb, 'Need' is normally followed by an infinitive 'To'. The basic meaning of 'Need' is necessity.
Mukhya Kriyaa ke taur par 'Need' kaa prayog sadhaaraN Verb kee tarah hotaa hai aur isakee teen Form hotee hai aur vibhinn Tense ke niyamo
ke mutaabik inakaa prayog hotaa hai. Jaise Present Indefinite Tense meiN third person singular ke saath isame 's/es' lagataa hai aur prashnavaachak aur
nakaaratamak vaakyoN meiN 'Do/Does' kaa prayog hotaa hai. Mukhya verb ke taur par 'Need' ke baad 'To' aataa hai. Need kaa mool arth hai Jaroorat/aavashyakataa.

|Mujhe kisee cheej kee bhee jaroorat nahee paDee.||I did not need anything else.|

|Car ke aage ke daanye pahiye ko badale jaane kee jaroorat hai.||The front right tyre of your car needs to be changed.|
Use of 'Need' as a Modal Verb
As you know, Modals are helping verbs and are used with the Main Verbs. It remains same with Singular or Plural or any Person of the Subject. Always first form of Main verb is used after Modals. Modals do not change their form (i.e. spelling / addition of 's', 'ing' or 'en') according to the tense of the sentence. Infinitive 'To' comes only after two Modals - 'Used To' and 'Ought To'. Infinitive 'To' does not come after other Modals.
Jaisaa kee aap jaanate hai, Modal sahaayak kriyaa hai aur mukhya verb ke saath prayukt hote hai. Yah singular yaa plural yaa Subject ke kisee
bhee person ke saath samaan rahate hai. Modal ke saath hameshaa mukhya verb kee Ist form istemaal hotee hai. Modal kee form vaakya ke Tense ke anusaar nahee badalatee hai
(jaise spelling / 's/es' yaa 'ing' yaa 'en' kaa laganaa). Infinitive 'To' kewal 2 Modal 'Used To' aur 'Ought To' ke baad aataa hai. 'To' baaki Modal
ke baad nahee aataa hai.
'Need' as a Modal is used to express necessity. It is used in Negative and Interrogative sentences only. It is not used in Affirmative sentences. As Modal Verb,
'Need' has no past tense. In past tense also Modal 'Need' is not written as 'Needed'.
'Need' Modal ke taur par aavashyakataa ko vyakt karataa hai. Yah kewal nakaaratamak aur prashnaatamak vaakyoN men prayukt hotaa hai. Yah
sakaaraatamak vaakyoN meiN prayog nahee hotaa hai. 'Modal' ke taur par 'Need' kaa past tense nahee hotaa hai. Past tense meiN bhee Modal 'Need' ko 'Needed' nahee likhaa jaataa hai.

|KaramachaarioN ko unake maange naa maane jaane par niraash hone kee jaroorat nahee hai.||Workers need not get disheartened if their demands are not met.|
|Prabandhak varg ko khush hone kee jaroorat nahee hai kyonki aandolan khatm nahee huaa hai.||Management need not be happy as the agitation is not over.|
|HameN doosare deshoN se rupayaa maangane kee jaroorat nahee hai agar hum swayam kifaayat kareN.||We need not borrow money from other countries, if we economise ourselves.|
Interrogative sentence started with 'Need' - If answer of such question is affirmative, then 'Must' is used insted of 'Need' in
the answer. If answer of such question is negative, then 'Need not' is used.
'Need' se shuru Prashnavaachak vaakya - Yadi inakaa uttar sakaaraatamak hai to uttar meiN 'Need' kee bajaaye 'Must' kaa prayog kiyaa jaataa hai.
Yadi aise prashn kaa uttar nakaaraatamak ho to 'Need not' kaa prayog kiyaa jaataa hai.
|Kyaa inspector ko mere ghar aane kee jaroorat hai?||Need the Inspector visit my home?|
|Haan use hai.||Yes he must.|
|Nahee use jaroorat nahee hai.||No he needn't.|

'Need' in Perfect Tense is used to express that it would have been correct if the work was not done or the manner in which
the work done was not necessary or required to be done in that manner.
'Need' kaa Perfect Tense meiN prayog vyakt karataa hai kee sahee hotaa agar jo kaaya sampann huaa hai, nahee sampann hotaa yaa
jis Dhang se kaarya huaa hai us prakaar sampann karane kee jaroorat yaa aavashyakataa nahee thee.
