Must

Obligation or Duty is of three types (i) Should - for normal work - The peon should ring the bell; (ii) Ought to - for Moral duty - You ought to obey your parents; and (iii) Must - for command or compulsion - You must come in time daily.

Chaahiye teen prakaar ke hote hai. (i) Should - SadhaaraN kaarya ke liye - Chapraasee ko ghanTee bajaanee chaahiye; (ii) Ought to - Farz ke liye - Tumhe apane maataa pitaa kaa kahanaa maananaa chaahiye; aur (iii) Must - Avashya chaahiye - Tumhe roj samay par aanaa hee chaahiye.

'Must' is used to express necessity or strong recommendation, force, compulsion, order, obligation and duty.

'Must' kaa prayog jaroorat yaa jordaar anushanshaa, dabaav, majbooree, aadesh aur kartavya vyakt karane ke liye kiyaa jaataa hai.

Examples

Yogya ummeedawaar ko unake mool pramaaNapatra avashya laane chaahiye. The eligible candidates must bring their original certificates.
HameN traffic niyamo kaa paalan avashya karanaa chaahiye. We must obey the traffic rules.
Tumhe turant nikalanaa (avashya) chaahiye. You must leave immediately.
Tumhe project ko samay par jaroor pooraa karanaa chaahiye. You must complete the project in time.
Ab tumhe apane swaasthya kaa dhyaan avashya rakhanaa chaahiye. Now you must look after your health.


Tumhe binaa samay naShT kiye visheshagya se avashya milanaa chaahiye. You must consult a specialist without wasting more time.
Use aaj avashya tyaagapatra denaa chaahiye. She must resign today.
Tumhe apanee vyaakaraN avashya sudhaaranee chaahiye. You must improve your grammar.
Mujhe roj jaldee avashaya uThanaa chaahiye. I must get up early everyday.
Sabhee bhraShTaachaaree adhikaarioN ko avashya dunD diyaa jaanaa chaahiye. All the corrupt officials must be punished.
Tumhe kisee bhee kimat par makaan avashya khareedanaa chaahiye. You must buy a house at any cost.
Tumhe Principal se apane pariNaam ke baare meiN charchaa karane ke liye avashya milanaa chaahiye. You must see the principal to discuss about your result.
Tumhe ab jaroor nikalanaa chaahiye nahee to tumhaaree bus chhooT sakatee hai. You must leave now, otherwise you may miss the bus.
Tumhe apane aapako vyasano se avashya door rakhanaa chaahiye. You must keep yourself away from addictions.
Mere maataa-pitaa kal aa rahe haiN. Mujhe aaj meraa kamaraa avashya saaf karanaa chaahiye. My parents are coming tomorrow. I must clean my room today.

'Must not' is used to express Prohibition (something that is not permitted or not allowed) and Forceful Advice.

'Must not' kaa prayog niShedh (kuchh vastu jiskee ijaajat nahee hai yaa anumati nahee hai) aur prabhaavashaalee, sashakt salaah vyakt karane ke liye kiyaa jaataa hai.

LogoN ko dhaarmic anuShThaan meiN prayukt saamagree ko Gangaa nadee meiN Daalana nahee chaahiye. (Nishedh) People must not put articles used in holy rituals in the Ganga river.(Prohibition)
Tumhe madhushaalaa meiN nahee jaanaa chaahiye. (Sashakt salaah) You must not go to pub. (Forceful Advice)
Tumhe us laDake se dobaaraa nahee milanaa chaahiye. (Sashakt salaah) You must not meet that boy again. (Forceful Advice)
ParyaTakoN ko chiDiyaaghar meiN kisee bhee jaanwar ko khaane kee vastu nahee denee chaahiye. Visitors must not feed any animal in the zoo. (Prohibition)
Tumhe us kShetra men 9 baje ke baad nahee ghumanaa chaahiye. (Nishedh) You must not roam in that area after 9 pm. (Prohibition)
KaramachaarioN ko transfer ke liye baaharee dabaav/anushanshaa kaa sahaaraa nahee lenaa chaahiye. (Sashakt salaah) Employees must not resort to outside pressure/recommendation for transfer. (Forceful Advice)
HameN pustakaalaya meiN jor se nahee bolanaa chaahiye. (Nishedh) We mustn't speak loudly in the library. (Prohibition)
LogoN ko hospital meiN dhumrapaan nahee karanaa chaahiye. (Nishedh) People must not smoke in the hospital. (Prohibition)

'Must' is used to express strong probability.

'Must' kaa prayog sashakt/ghanee sambhaavanaa ko vyakt karane ke liye kiyaa jaataa hai.

Examples

Vah kuchh dino se nahee aa rahaa hai. Vah avashya beemaar hogaa. He has not been coming for a few days. He must be ill.
Usane apanee baaliyaaN kho dee. Vah jaroor pareshaan hogee. She lost her earrings. She must be upset.
Avyan teen ghanTe se khel rahaa hai. Ab use jaroor neend aa rahee hogee. Avyan has been playing for the last three hours. Now he must be feeling sleepy.
Tum saare din se kaam kar rahe ho, tum jaroor thak gaye honge. You have been working all day, you must be tired.
Dulhan ne subah se kuchh nahee liyaa hai. Vah jaroor bhookhee hogee. The bride has not taken anything since morning. She must be hungry.
Vah abhee tak office nahee pahunchaa hai. Usane jaroor lambaa raastaa liyaa hogaa. He has not yet reached the office. He must have taken a long route.
Vah abhee tak ghar naheen pahunchee hai. Usane jaroor apanee adhikrit bus miss kar dee hogee. She has not yet arrived at home. She must have missed her chartered bus.
Pareshaan mat ho. Vah avashya hee majaak kar rahee hogee. Don't get upset. She must be joking.
Usane apane pati ko jaroor bataayaa hogaa. She must have told her husband.



Shaam ke paanch bajakar 35 minute huay hai. Vah avashya chalee gayee hogee. It is 5.35 pm. She must have left.
Vah jaroor metro se aayaa hogaa. He must have come by metro.
Vah avashya hee madiraalayaa meiN pee rahaa hogaa. He must be drinking in the pub.
Chori aadheeraat 12 baje hui hogee. The theft must have taken place at 12 midnight.
Usane jaroor koi sharaarat kee hogee. He must have done some mischief.
Vah jaroor jhooTh bol rahee hogee. She must be lying.
Tumne use nateejo ke baare meiN avashya sachet kar diyaa hogaa. You must have warned her about the consequences.

'Must' is used to express only present action and future action. 'Must' has no past tense.

'Must' kaa prayog kewal present aur future action ko vyakt karane ke liye kiyaa jaataa hai. 'Must' kaa koi past tense nahee hotaa.

Interrogative sentence started with 'Must' - If answer of such question is affirmative, then 'Must' is used in the answer. If answer of such question is negative, then 'Need not' is used insted of 'Must not' in the answer.

'Must' se shuru Prashnavaachak vaakya - Yadi inakaa uttar sakaaraatamak hai to uttar meiN 'Must' kaa prayog kiyaa jaataa hai. Yadi aise prashn kaa uttar nakaaraatamak ho to 'Must not' kee bajaaye 'Need not' kaa prayog kiyaa jaataa hai.

Nahee, koi jaroorat nahee hai is samay paraamarsh karane kee. no, you needn't consult at this time.
Kyaa tumhaaraa birthday manaane sey pahale tumhaaraa jaanaa jarooree hai? Must you go before celebrating your birthday?
Haan, Mujhe jaroor jaanaa chaahiye. Yes, I must go.
Nahee, Mujhe jaane kee koi aavashyaktaa nahee hai. No, I needn't go.
Agar tum London meiN rahate ho to gaaDee jarooree hai. If you put up in London, a vehicle is a must.
Agar yah shaadee kaa samaaroh hai to ladies sangeet (gaana aur nritya) jarooree hai. If it is a function of marriage, ladies sangeet (song and dance) is a must.
