Dare

'Dare' can be used both as a Modal Auxiliary Verb as well as Main Verb. Therefore it is also known as Semi Modal Verb.

'Dare' ko Modal sahaayak Kriyaa aur mukhya Kriyaa dono prakaar se prayog kar sakate haiN. Isiliye ise Semi Modal Verb bhee kahate haiN.

Use of 'Dare' as a Main Verb

As a Main Verb 'Dare' is used as an ordinary verb and has the same three forms of verb and used as per the rules of different tenses. Like in Present Indefinite Tense the third person singular ends with an 's/es', and in interrogative and negative sentences 'Do/Does' is used. As a Main verb, 'Dare' is normally followed by an infinitive 'To'. The basic meaning of 'Dare' is Have the courage to do something or to challenge.

Mukhya Kriyaa ke taur par 'Dare' kaa prayog sadhaaraN Verb kee tarah hotaa hai aur isakee teen Form hotee hai aur vibhinn Tense ke niyamo ke mutaabik inakaa prayog hotaa hai. Jaise Present Indefinite Tense meiN third person singular ke saath isame 's/es' lagataa hai aur prashnavaachak aur nakaaratamak vaakyoN meiN 'Do/Does' kaa prayog hotaa hai. Mukhya verb ke taur par 'Dare' ke baad 'To' aataa hai. Dare kaa mool arth hai kisee kaarya ko karane kaa dussaahas yaa chunautee denaa.

Vah tumhaare saamane khaDe hone kee himmat rakhataa hai. He dares to stand in front of you.
Usakee apane pati kee avagyaa karane kee himmat nahee hui. She did not dare to disobey her husband.
Tum usake vipreet ek shabd kahane kee himmat nahee karate ho. You do not dare to say a single word against her.
Kyaa usake saath sambandho ko sweekaar karane kaa usane saahas dikhaayaa? Did she dare to accept her affairs with him?
Vah naukaree chhoDane kaa saahas nahee karegaa. He will not dare to resign from the job.
Kyaa tum apane boss ke khilaaf shikaayat karane kee himmat karoge? Will you dare to complain against your boss?
Hamaare office meiN kaniShTh adhikaaree kisee bhee note(lekh) par pratikool TippaNee karane kee himmat nahee karate haiN. In our office junior officers do not dare to put adverse remark on any note.
VariShTh adhikaaree bhee usake cabin meiN binaa ijaajat pravesh karane kee himmat nahee karate haiN. Even senior officers do not dare to enter into his cabin without permission.
Usakee tilchiTTo ko maarane kee himmat nahee hui. She did not dare to kill the cockroaches.
Agar kamare meiN ek chhipakalee hai to vah vahaaN akele sone kee himmat nahee karatee hai. If there is a lizard in the room, she does not dare to sleep there alone.
Avyan Vartika ko binaa haath lagaaye gate ke aarpaar bike chalaane ko lalakaarataa hai. Avyan dares Vartika to ride her bike through the gate without touching it with hands.
Kanika Avyan ko baDaa patthar ko laanghane kee chunautee detee hai. Kanika dares Avyan to jump over the big stone.

Use of 'Dare' as a Modal Verb

As you know, Modals are helping verbs and are used with the Main Verbs. It remains same with Singular or Plural or any Person of the Subject. Always first form of Main verb is used after Modals. Modals do not change their form (i.e. spelling / addition of 's', 'ing' or 'en') according to the tense of the sentence. Infinitive 'To' comes only after two Modals - 'Used To' and 'Ought To'. Infinitive 'To' does not come after other Modals.

Jaisaa kee aap jaanate hai, Modal sahaayak kriyaa hai aur mukhya verb ke saath prayukt hote hai. Yah singular yaa plural yaa Subject ke kisee bhee person ke saath samaan rahate hai. Modal ke saath hameshaa mukhya verb kee Ist form istemaal hotee hai. Modal kee form vaakya ke Tense ke anusaar nahee badalatee hai (jaise spelling / 's/es' yaa 'ing' yaa 'en' kaa laganaa). Infinitive 'To' kewal 2 Modal 'Used To' aur 'Ought To' ke baad aataa hai. 'To' baaki Modal ke baad nahee aataa hai.

'Dare' as a Modal is used to express courage to do something or to challenge. It is normally used in Negative and Interrogative sentences only. As Modal Verb, 'Dare' has no past tense.

'Dare' Modal ke taur par kisee kaarya ko karane kaa dussaahas karanaa yaa himmat karanaa yaa chunautee denaa vyakt karataa hai. Yah aamtaur par nakaaratamak aur prashnaatamak vaakyoN men prayukt hotaa hai. 'Modal' ke taur par 'Dare' kaa past tense nahee hotaa hai.

Sardana kee nyaayaadheesh ke saamane jhooTh bolane kee himmat nahee hai. Sardana dare not speak lies before the Magistrate.
Kyaa nyaayaadheesh kee aparaadhee ke pakSh meiN order karane kee himmat hai? Dare the Magistrate issue order in favour of the culprit?
Emergency ke dauraan, logoN kee shaashan ke viruddh ek bhee shabd bolane kee himmat nahee thee. During emergency, people dared not speak even a word against the administration.
Usakee apanee maa se aur rupayoN ko maangane kee himmat nahee hui. She dared not ask her mother for more money.
UnameN usakee marjee ke vipreet kuchh bhee karane kaa saahas nahee hai. They dare not do anything against her wish.
MujhameN apanee patnee se kuchh bhee chhipaane kee himmat nahee hai. I dare not hide anything from my wife.
MujhameN kiseekee aankhoN meiN aansoo dekhane kee himmat nahee hai. I dare not see tears in anyone's eyes.

'How Dare' is used to express surprise, astonishment, shock or anger of the speaker.

'How Dare' kaa prayog vaktaa kaa aashcharya, hairat, sadamaa yaa gusse ko vyakt karane ke liye kiyaa jaataa hai.

Tumhaaree himmat kaise hui? Tumhaare haath ekdum se haTaao! (Tum aise dhriShT kaise ho sakate ho?) How dare you? Take your hands off me at once! (How can you be so bold?) 
Usakee tumase aisaa kahane kee himmat kaise hui? (Usakee gustaakhee par mujhe aashcharya hai.) How dare he say so to you? (I wonder at such audacity)
Tumhaaree apane pitaajee ke samakSh is prakaar bolane kee himmat kaise hui? How dare you speak like this before your father?

'Dare Say / Daresay' is used to express the meaning probably or suppose.

'Dare Say / Daresay' kaa prayog arth - shaayad, kadachit yaa anumaan ko vyakt karane ke liye kiyaa jaataa hai.

Shaayad yah sab Theek ho jaayegaa. I dare say, it will be alright.
Shaayad vah meraa prastaav sweekaar kar le. I dare say, she may accept my proposal.
Shaayad tum usakee uplabdhioN se aashcharyachakit ho jaao. I dare say, you will be surprised to see her achievements.
Shaaya court tumhaare pakSh meiN order kar de. I dare say, the court may issue an order in your favour.
Shaayad yah kaam aapake sapano ko naShT kar de. I dare say, this action may destroy your dreams.
Shaayad shaam ko barsaat ho. I dare say, it may rain in the evening.
Shaayad vah baad meiN aaye. I dare say, she may come later.
Shaayad usane talaak ke liye aavedan kar diyaa hai. I dare say, she has applied for divorce.
Shaayad vah mere liye ek gulaab khareede. I dare say, she will buy a rose for me.
Shaayad maiN jyaadaatar laDakiyoN ke liye aadarsh aadamee hooN. I dare say, I am the ideal man for most of the girls.
Shaayad tum Theek/sahee ho. I dare say, you are right.
