Direct Indirect Speech - Optative Sentences

Optative Sentence indicates a wish, pray or desire. It ends with exclamation mark (!).

Ichchhaasuchak vaakya meiN abhivaadan, praarthanaa yaa ichchhaa vyakt karataa hai. Isake ant meiN exclamation mark(!) aataa hai.

Rule no. 1

For making Indirect Speech of Optative Sentence, 'Said' of Reporting Verb is changed according to the Optative Word' of Reporting Speech. A list of such words is given below.

Ichchhaasukak vaakyo kaa apratyakSh kathan banaane ke liye Reporting Verb ke 'Said' ko Reporting Speech meiN aaye 'ichchhaasukak shabd' ke anusaar badalate hai. Aise shabdoN kee ek soochi neeche dee gai hai.


Optative words In place of 'Said'
Good Morning! Wished
Good Evening! Wished
Good Afternoon! Wished
Good Night! Bade
Good Bye! Bade
Farewell! Bade
Would that…! Wished
O that…! Wished
O for…! Wished
May/May God Prayed
If…were (only imagination) Wished …Would

Examples of Optative Sentences

Direct Usane kahaa, "Namaste (Subah kee) mammee!" He said, "Good morning, Mom!"
Indirect Usane apanee mammee se (subah kee) namaste kee. He wished his Mom good morning.
Direct Sachin ne kahaa, " Namaste (shaam kee) shreemaan!" Sachin said, "Good evening, Sir!"
Indirect Sachin ne shreemaan ko namaste (shaam kee) kee. Sachin respectfully wished the sir good evening. / Sachin respectfully wished me (you / him / her / them /…) good evening.
Direct Prashant ne kahaa, "Shubhraatri paapaa!" Prashant said, "Good night, paapaa!"
Indirect Prashant ne apane paapaa ko shubhraatri kahaa. Prashant bade his paapaa good night.

Direct Aman ne kahaa, "Vidaa, dosto!" Aman said, "Good bye, friends!"
Indirect Aman ne apane dosto ko vidaa kahaa. Aman bade his friends good bye.
Direct Neha ne use kahaa, "Kaash us vakt tum yahaaN hote!" Neha said to him, "Would that you were here at that time!"
Indirect Neha ne kaamanaa kee ki vah us vakt vahaaN hotaa. Neha wished that he had been there at that time.
Direct Usane kahaa, "Kaash mere paas pakShio ke pankh hote." He said, "O that I had the wings of a bird."
Indirect Usane chaahaa kee usake paas pakShio ke pankh hote. He wished that he had the wings of bird.
Direct Usane kahaa, "O ek glass paani mil jaaye." She said, "O for a glass of water."
Indirect Usane ek glass paani kee kaamanaa kee. She wished for a glass of water.
